County FAQs

We’ve compiled the answers to FAQs (frequently asked questions) about travelling to The County. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to reach out through our contact page.

Is it safe to travel to Prince Edward County during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Please visit our COVID-19 information page for up-to-date information about traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic.ย

I’m looking for last minute accommodations! Can you help?

Accommodations tend to book up fast for the summer season, and many require a minimum of two nights when booking. So the key is to give yourself plenty of time to plan. If you can delay travel, try visiting mid-week or during the spring, fall or winter seasons. You’ll find it a little easier to reserve your dream holiday digs. We don’t make bookings. But for last minute options, try online platforms, Sandbanks Vacations & Tours or County Holiday Homes, two agencies that manage short-term rentals.

I just want to stay one night. Any tips for places that accept one-night bookings?

A one-night rental is rare in the summer season. The key is to give yourself plenty of time to plan. If you can delay travel, try visiting mid-week or during the spring, fall or winter seasons, you’ll find it a little easier to find a place that accepts single-night stays. Try online booking platforms, Sandbanks Vacations & Tours or County Holiday Homes, two agencies that manage short-term rentals.

I want to book a tour. Can you help?

An exhaustive list of taxis, vans, limos and more can be found on our Tours blog. Remember that The Countyโ€™s wine, beer, spirits and cider are about tasting the terroir โ€“ not getting tanked. Refuel with plenty of water throughout the day, indulge in the wide variety of local eateries, and donโ€™t feel badly about not drinking the whole tasting flight โ€“ thatโ€™s what theย spittoonย is for. Andย neverย drink and drive.

Where can I park to use the Millennium Trail?

In Hillier, there is limited trail parking at the entrance point at Station Road. In Wellington, leave your vehicle at the gravel parking lot next to the Wellington & District Community Centre. The Trail is located just south of the Community Centre.

In Bloomfield, leave your vehicle in the parking lot at the former Pinecrest School at 27 Corey St. In Picton, you’ll find a free municipal parking lot on Mary St. at Elizabeth St. (behind the Bean Counter Cafe). From there, it’s a small hop to the Trail entrance by the LCBO/Agrarian Market.

Read more about The Millennium Trail, a 46-km linear park, or consult this Google Map for trail details.

Where can I park my RV for the night?

Find options for RVs, trailers or camping on our campgrounds page. Please note that it is not legal to stay overnight on any municipal property or parking lot and it’s not permitted to camp (whether in a tent, RV, trailer or vehicle) at any Quinte Conservation areas in Prince Edward County. Please ensure that you are parking or camping in a properly zoned campsite: private land rental for camping is not permitted (i.e. farm fields, private forests, lawns etc.) In Summer 2021, there will be additional bylaw enforcement resources put in place to monitor illegal parking and illegal camping. The County of Prince Edward has also put new penalties in place. Illegal camping is punishable by a $500 fine.

I got a parking ticket. How do I pay?

For more information about parking tickets, visit our Parking Ticket info page. Please note that parking tickets must be paid or appealed, regardless of where your license plate is registered.

I need to charge my electric vehicle – where can I?

We recommend checking out PlugShare to find local charging stations available throughout The County. The charging station in the municipal parking lot at 55 King Street is currently out of order and we are actively working on a solution.ย

How do I know if the beaches are at capacity?

Avoid the anxiety by booking your Provincial Park day-use permit in advance. This can be done up to five days before your trip. Each Provincial Park and Conservation Area posts their alerts and notices on their Twitter feeds. You do not have to have a Twitter account to view:

  • Sandbanks Provincial Park – @sandbankspp
  • North Beach Provincial Park – @northbeachpp
  • Wellington Rotary Beach (The County) – @shire_hall
  • Little Bluff Conservation Area – @quinteca

Tune into 99.3 County FM for their beach reports, 8 times/day during the peak summer season.

We got turned away from Sandbanks because it was full. Now what?

We have lots of ideas. Find nine things to do away from the beach here. (En francais ici.)

Still want to get on the water? Here are some ideas for fishing, charters, splashpads and more.

I gotta pee! Where can I go?

Check our map of public toilets. There, you’ll find info on washroom facilities and port-a-potties (which are typically available from early spring to Thanksgiving). Please do not answer the call of nature by “going” on nature.

I want to bring my dog. Is Fido welcome?

There are lots of dog-friendly wineries, patios and options in Prince Edward County – you’ll even find a few places to take your dog for a dip. Take a read of our pooch-friendly blog and be sure sure to travel with a water bowl and a few treats!

I want to have a campfire – can I?

If you are camping at Sandbanks Provincial Park or another properly zoned campground you are welcome to have a campfire at the designated fire pit area on your campsite as long as there is no burn ban in effect. You can check whether there is an ongoing burn ban by visiting thecounty.ca and checking the alert near the top of the page. The burn ban status also applies to campfires in a fire pit or outdoor fireplace/chiminea at rented accommodations and in addition you must call 1.833.376.1011 to activate the burn permit supplied by your host before starting your campfire. The burn permit must be activated any time you start a fire and a single activation does not apply to your whole stay. Please note that it is not legal to have a campfire on any municipal property or at any Quinte Conservation Areas in Prince Edward County, and it is against the law to have an outdoor fire without an activated Burn Permit in Prince Edward County.ย

๐ŸŒฎPlan Your Meals๐ŸŒฎโ  โ  And by that we don' ๐ŸŒฎPlan Your Meals๐ŸŒฎโ
โ
And by that we don't just mean making a reservation! While reservations are definitely recommended wherever possible, it's also very true that many restaurants in The County operate on a first-come, first-served basis. This can sometimes be inconvenient, but it's always worth it, if these delightfully crispy fried chicken tacos from @BermudaPEC are any indication... ๐Ÿคคโ
โ
You just have to (say it with us) Plan In Advance! Here are some of our top tips for navigating first-come, first-served dining in The County: โ
โ
๐Ÿ’ป Research, research, research! Browse VisitPEC.ca to find restaurants you're interested in. If they don't take reservations, research more and have some back-ups in mind nearby - just in case. โ
โ
๐Ÿ•” Plan to arrive at your desired spot 30-45 mins before you want to eat. The wait is harder when you're hungry, so if you come with enough energy to have a little stroll around the area while you wait for your name to come to the top of the list, you'll be perfectly happy come dinnertime. โ
โ
๐Ÿ”€ Switch things up during your visit and think about modifying your mealtimes to eat during off-peak hours. Brunch is all the rage, but why not make it a "lupper"? And sometimes after a long day, a later dinner hits the spot. Just be sure to confirm hours of operation before working this tactic into your plan! โ
โ
Note: spots that do take reservations almost always allow for some walk-ins. These tips apply in this situation as well. โ

Thinking of planning a last-minute trip to The County?โ
โ
โ Before you do, remember that last-minute availability is rare in The County. So don't add a trip to your calendar, book a tour, or make adinner reservation, without getting your hotel, motel, b&b, inn, campsite, vacation rental, or cottage squared away first. โ
โ
And when you stay, stay for a while! There's too much to see and do in a day, so plan to stay for two nights at the very least (you'll notice most accommodators have two-night minimums anyhow). โ
โ
At this time of year, you'll find many accommodations are fully booked until the Fall already. But here's an insider tip: Autumn is an exceptional time to visit The County! โ
