The Millennium Trail: Everything You Need to Know🚲

The Millennium Trail is a 46-km multi-use trail perfect for hiking, biking or even horseback riding. Stretching from Carrying Place to Picton, backing onto farmers’ fields and vineyards, it’s a great way to experience the tranquility of The County.

Find a Google map with all the info here:

The linear park, as it’s referred to, has more than 30 places where you can hop on and off, and is close to many of The County’s wineries, breweries, restaurants and shops. So, if you plan your Millennium Trail trek accordingly, you could reward yourself with refreshing beverage and noshing stops along the way! (See: How to do a Millennium Trail Pub Crawl.)

The trail has been fully refurbished, including a section that glides past Slab Creek wetlands, a small jaunt from Stanner’s Vineyards, which is arguably the most beautiful part of the path: teeming with chirping birds of every flock and feather, toads and turtles, an occasional snake, and yes, even, beavers. It’s home to four herons nests and a vibrant, yet peaceful part of the trail.

Please note that public health travel advisories and orders are changing frequently during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Please consult our COVID-19 Essential Info page for the latest updates.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT THE TRAIL?

  • Speed limits: the current bylaw restricts speeds to 20 km/h “within any town, village or hamlet.” The rest of the trail has a 50 km/h max.
  • The trail cuts across some very busy roads, so please be patient and careful when crossing roads, especially anywhere on Hwy 33, County Rd. 1 and County Rd. 49.
  • The trail is open for use from 7 a.m. – 11 p.m., and since it does pass through neighbourhoods and backyards, do refrain from inviting yourself into a family BBQ.
  • There are municipal parking lots within a few hundred meters of the trail: In Wellington, use the gravel lot at the Wellington & District Arena (at 111 Belleville St/Cty Rd #2) or the ball parks (Niles St.) are great spots to park, a short walk to multiple trail entrances. In Bloomfield, park in the Brick St. lot for the Millpond Park, or at the former Pinecrest School at 27 Corey St. The trail entrance is on Stanley Street.
  • Find a rest stop at West Street in Wellington, where a sort of “train station” provides benches for weary bike butts, a bike repair station, and a history of both the Canadian National Railway and the First Nations in Prince Edward County.
  • The trail can be used by walkers, hikers, joggers, cyclists, ATV riders, dirt bikers (licensed & insured), horses and riders, mobility devices, snowmobiles, skiers, snowshoers, pets. Out of that long list of users, it’s horses that have the ultimate right of way.
  • Winter users should know that ATVs and dirt bikes are not permitted on the trail when there is snow on the ground. Snowmobiles are permitted. Pedestrians should be aware of icy/packed snow conditions that can make for a slippery walk.
  • Looking to cycle but don’t have your own wheels? You can rent from the friendly folks at Ideal Bike,  PEDEGO, Closson Road Cycles, Westlake EBikes or County Bike Rentals.
  • No cars or trucks are allowed; however, emergency and service utility vehicles, as well as farm tractors from adjacent properties, do have access.

So, lace up your hiking boots, hop on your bike, jump on your ATV – whatever your preferred mode of leisure travel is – and get out there and see The County from a truly unique vantage point. Happy trails!

WHAT’S THE HISTORY OF THE TRAIL?

  • Once upon 140 years ago, the Millennium Trail was the Prince Edward County Railway (PECR). Beginning in 1879, it serviced 10 stops: Picton, Bloomfield, Hallowell, Wellington, Niles’ Corner, Hillier, Consecon, Weller’s Bay, Canal and Trenton.
  • The County purchased the original PECR line in 1997 and began transforming it into the multi-purpose trail it is today. However, it’s thanks to a dedicated and tireless group of volunteers and advocates that the project was finally completed.
  • The original Picton station is now the home to C.F. Evans Lumber Company.

The pup-focused experience allows your dog to have an enriching solo off-leash session in a fully-enclosed area where they can run and sniff out delicious homemade dog treats.

🥎 If your dog loves to play fetch and is happy around other dogs, then head to the dog park in Delhi Park in Picton. This large, enclosed area is big enough to be able to separate from the "pack" and even has a smaller enclosed area for small dogs and puppies.

🐦 Spring Birding Festival 🐦 The annua 🐦 Spring Birding Festival 🐦

The annual Spring Birding Festival @peptbo is back and in person this year. With one weekend already under their belt, there's still much to look forward to including guided walks in Traverse Woods, webinars, banding demonstrations and more. Check out our event listing or visit peptbo.ca for more details.

What is Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory?

PEPtBO is a volunteer-run charity committed to increasing the appreciation, knowledge, and understanding of birds by collecting data through spring and fall banding programs, a daily census, observation surveys, and research projects. It is located within the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, one of the first sites in Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Protected Areas Network to protect habitat for migratory passerine birds (songbirds). It is part of the globally significant Prince Edward County South Shore Important Bird Area.

🌊 Book in Advance ⛱ Daily Vehicle Perm 🌊 Book in Advance ⛱

Daily Vehicle Permits are back at Sandbanks and North Beach @ontarioparks for 2022. If you visited last year you will be familiar with this process, but if you're visiting for the first time or need a refresher, read on.

Daily Vehicle Permits must be booked in advance for day-use access to The County's Provincial Parks and can be booked up to 5-days in advance of your visit. Guests will be turned away at the gate if sold out, so we highly encourage you to take advantage of this service to avoid disappointment.

Fun Fact: Sandbanks was sold out approximately 60 days between mid-June and August. North Beach was sold out 30 days.

If you are a season's pass holder you still need to book a Daily Vehicle Permit in advance, but this will be free of charge. For non-season's pass holders regular rates apply daily. They are available for booking at North Beach 5 days in advance of its opening on June 11. Daily Vehicle Permits are already available for booking at Sandbanks.

Do:
✅ Book up to 5 days in advance online at reservations.ontarioparks.com
✅ Secure a permit for each vehicle that will be visiting the park.
✅ Reserve whether you plan on visiting the beach or walking the trails.
✅ Book a Daily Vehicle Permit even if you are a season's pass holder.
✅ Explore beyond the beach. Head to VisitPEC.ca for inspiration.

Don't:
❌ Visit the park without booking a Daily Vehicle Permit in advance, especially on weekends from mid-June through August.
❌ Choose to come to Sandbanks or North Beach for a spontaneous day trip.
❌ Get turned away. Book in advance.

To reserve your Daily Vehicle permit head to reservations.ontarioparks.com and click Day Use.
